VIC – Melbourne Basket Brigade

The Melbourne Basket Brigade is a small but dedicated force for good, local volunteers who want to make a difference to those in need. We fundraise throughout the year and then in December we (along with lots of awesome volunteers) pack and deliver baskets of food and toys and deliver them anonymously to families in need before Christmas time.

We welcome you to read on and find out more about our fundraising projects, how you can get involved in those, how you can make donations or how to come along to our Packing Day where we pack and deliver the food and toys. Sunday 18th December 2016 (Please note it is a Sunday this year)
Xavier College Brighton Campus – New St. (near the intersection of South Rd)
Volunteer Registration is 10am, we usually only take a couple of hours to wrap and pack so we are aiming to start loading vehicles between 2.00 & 3.00pm.
Please note re-deliveries:
We will not be able to load cars prior to 2.00pm as all deliveries need to be allocated before we start sending cars out to make sure no baskets are missed out or left behind. Please keep this in mind when completing your survey, thank you.
Who can join?
You, your friends, family, work mates and children are all welcome. The more the merrier we just need to know who is coming so register everyone.
How to join?
An online registration form will be made available in October. Everybody is welcome, you can come and pack baskets, wrap toys and deliver the baskets too – it’s really up to you. You tell us what you want to do in the registration survey so let us know . If you are an experienced Packing Day volunteer and would like to be on crew then please email Tina or Cory at [email protected] to let us know. So if you want to make a real difference at a grass roots level to families in need at Christmas time, come join us!
What to Bring?
Comfortable shoes and clothes to pack and deliver in, Christmas Cheers, Big Smiles, Crazy Christmas Hats, Water, Snacks and donations are still welcome on the day (Cash, Chq, Card, Non Perishable Food & Toys).
You will also be emailed an indemnity form the weekend before the Packing Day, please complete and bring this with you for all adults attending. You can complete on the day however if you bring all pages completed with you on the day you get to come through the Express Registration queue – whooo hooo!!!!

2014 Successes
In 2014 we are happy to say that we were able to:
Packed & Delivered Baskets to more than 235 households
Feed approximately 2500 people across Victoria
All with 210 Volunteers across 2 days
And organised by a committee of only 7 people
Great Effort to all those involved – come join us to make even more of a difference!

2013 Successes
In 2013 we are happy to say that we were able to:
Pack & Deliver 562 Baskets
Feed Approx 2326 people across Victoria
All with 268 Volunteers across 2 days
And organised by a committee of only 7 people

Big Thanks to all those who ran and walked in the Caulfield Fun Run Day put on by the Caulfield Rotary Club. We had heaps of walkers and runners on the day which is great who raised over $3,000 – Well Done Team! And because of our awesome fundraising effort we were rewarded with an additional $500 from the Caulfield Bendigo Community Bank – Love the Community Banks supporting the Community!

So a Big thanks to those that ran and walked and to all their supporters who couldn’t make it but chipped in a dollar or two. Awesome effort to start the fundraising year.

Upcoming Fundraising Events

This year we have a goal to feed 600 Families across Victoria. To do this we need to raise $30,000 and we need your help!

Tin shaking is a huge key fundraiser for us at the Melbourne Basket Brigade. We need volunteers for 2 – 4 hours on allocated Sundays (we promise to make it fun!). To find out when our next Tin Shake is, please follow us on Facebook.

If you know any businesses or companies that would like to support a grass roots organisation that helps families in need then please put them in touch with us, we would love to speak with them. All donations over $2 are tax deductible as the Melbourne Basket Brigade is a Magic Moments Foundation project. Have you told your family and friends about Basket Brigade, how much fun you have and what a great cause it is? Well what if you found 5 friends or family to donate to feed a family, that would be 5 Families fed by you! And if 10 Basket Brigade Volunteers found 5 friends and family that would be 50 families fed, imagine how quickly we could raise the remaining money if you were able to speak to just 5 people and get 5 donations of $50 each. Remember all donations to the Magic Moments Melbourne Basket Brigade over $2 are tax deductible so why not ask? It can’t hurt to ask festive season.

We still need to collect hundreds of toys so we can provide smiles to children this year aged 0 to 12. If you can help by getting together a toy collection among friends, family, work mates or even you sporting club or school that would be awesome. Any number of New toys are welcome. Please contact us if you would like to collect toys as we need them to arrive prior to Packing Day. This is so we can make sure we have enough toys!

A: The Basket Brigades work with local grass roots community groups and organisations that work with the families in need. By connecting with these groups we are able to help them provide much needed services that they would otherwise struggle to provide. We are also able to identify the people most worthy of the donations.
A: We deliver baskets to wherever they are needed.
A: We are a not for profit organisation that is run totally by volunteers who care about making a difference in the lives of others. The only administrative fees we have are some basic postage costs and our insurances. So approximately 98-99% of the funds raised are used on the projects, programs and people in the community. Where possible all our brochures and marketing materials are donated by generous businesses who are keen supporters of the Basket Brigade. If you have a business and would like to support us give us a call or drop us an email – we would love to hear from you.
A: The Basket Brigades listed on this website are a program of the Magic Moments Foundation of Australia which is a registered non-profit charity. Any donation over $2 will receive a tax deductible receipt which you can then use to claim as a tax deduction.
A: The baskets consist of staple foods, festive foods and items as well as toys for the children of the families. Pasta, rice, tinned and fresh foods accompany Christmas cakes, tinned ham, custard and jelly. The idea is to provide yummy things to make a festive Christmas Day and staple items for the days before and after. We also often provide hampers with slight variations for families who may have dietary or religious restrictions around particular foods if we are made aware of this.
A: The baskets are given anonymously – in the true spirit of Christmas these baskets are a gift to show that there are people who love and care for them even if they never find out who these people are. A small note is included in the parcel that lets them know that this is a gift from someone that cares and encourages them to do the same when the day comes that they are able to.
