NSW – Newcastle Basket Brigade

The Newcastle Basket Brigade is part of a national not-for–profit organisation called Magic Moments Foundation of Australia. It was in existence in previous years. It went quiet for a few and in 2014, a small group of eager volunteers decided to rekindle the group just 4 weeks before Christmas. In the space of 3 weeks, they formed a committee of 13 people and 35 volunteers, assisting in surpassing their goal of 100 baskets. Baskets of food, toys, and gifts are delivered anonymously to people in need close to Christmas. In 2015, 700 baskets were joyously delivered and received.

Recipients have fallen on hard times or just need to be reminded that someone cares and that Christmas can be full of love. We are really excited this year and hope to inspire a following to keep the Basket Brigade going and growing for many years to come. We would love more volunteers for Wrapping Days, donations of goods and food and donations of funds. You can follow us on Facebook.

Comfortable shoes and clothes to pack and deliver in, Christmas Cheers, Big Smiles, Crazy Christmas Hats, Snacks. Donations are still welcome on the day (cash, non perishable food & toys). Please bring your completed indemnity form. We are hoping to organise a sausage sizzle lunch.

Come and help pack baskets, wrap toys and you can deliver the baskets too – it’s really up to you.

Find 25 food items to feed a family:
Have you told your family and friends about the Basket Brigade, how much fun you could have and what a great cause it is? Well what if you found 5 friends or family. Ask them for 5 items each to donate to feed a family – that could be a whole family fed! – imagine how quickly we could fill more baskets if each person was to speak to just 5 people and get 5 donations of food.

Remember all cash donations to the Magic Moments Newcastle Basket Brigade over $2 are tax deductible so why not ask for this too?

Toy raising and wishing basket kits:
We still need to collect hundreds of toys so we can provide smiles to children this year aged 0 to 14. If you can help by getting together a toy collection among friends, family, work mates or even your sporting club or school that would be awesome – any number of new toys are welcome.

Please contact us if you would like to collect toys as we need them to arrive prior to Packing Day. We have wishing basket kits with posters we can send to you or letters you can use to take to your local school or sports event.

Fill in the registration survey below and we will co-ordinate the rest. Wrapping Registration.

None of what we do would not be possible without the very generous donations gifted to us by the following organisations. Thank You to All the businesses, organisations, families and individuals who have generously donated.

How It Works

This program is built on the simple notion
that one small act of generosity on the
part of one caring person can transform
the lives of hundreds.

The volunteers collect generous
donations in the form of money,
food, clothes, toys, books, etc.

Throughout the year volunteers actively
promote the program and find out who in
our community is in most need of support.

Give Now

The Call
Save the Dates are sent out to
notify volunteers a month before
packing day.

Packing Day
Hundreds of volunteers gather in church,
school and community halls to fill baskets
with teachers and teens.

Gifting Day
The baskets are delivered to the
families to bring joy and happiness
to their lives at Christmas.

A: The Basket Brigades work with local grass roots community groups and organisations that work with the families in need. By connecting with these groups we are able to help them provide much needed services that they would otherwise struggle to provide. We are also able to identify the people most worthy of the donations.
A: We deliver baskets to wherever they are needed.
A: We are a not for profit organisation that is run totally by volunteers who care about making a difference in the lives of others. The only administrative fees we have are some basic postage costs and our insurances. So approximately 98-99% of the funds raised are used on the projects, programs and people in the community. Where possible all our brochures and marketing materials are donated by generous businesses who are keen supporters of the Basket Brigade. If you have a business and would like to support us give us a call or drop us an email – we would love to hear from you.
A: The Basket Brigades listed on this website are a program of the Magic Moments Foundation of Australia which is a registered non-profit charity. Any donation over $2 will receive a tax deductible receipt which you can then use to claim as a tax deduction.
A: The baskets consist of staple foods, festive foods and items as well as toys for the children of the families. Pasta, rice, tinned and fresh foods accompany Christmas cakes, tinned ham, custard and jelly. The idea is to provide yummy things to make a festive Christmas Day and staple items for the days before and after. We also often provide hampers with slight variations for families who may have dietary or religious restrictions around particular foods if we are made aware of this.
A: The baskets are given anonymously – in the true spirit of Christmas these baskets are a gift to show that there are people who love and care for them even if they never find out who these people are. A small note is included in the parcel that lets them know that this is a gift from someone that cares and encourages them to do the same when the day comes that they are able to.

We change people’s
lives one basket at a time.
