VIC – Melbourne Basket Brigade

The Melbourne Basket Brigade is all about giving back at Christmas. We are a group of passionate volunteers who help those who have fallen on hard times by anonymously delivering food hampers and hand-wrapped toys in order to celebrate what otherwise would be a stressful time of the year.

We are on a mission to deliver over 500 hampers to disadvantaged families this Christmas, and in order to do that we ask for a little help from the local Melbourne community. We want you to take part this year in spreading joy and hope this Christmas.

How you can help?

Please follow the Donate button on this page to make a tax deductable donation. Rest assured this charity programme is completely run by hard-working volunteers who will make every cent of your donation count!

Never underestimate the power of good will from the individual. This is our 12 week food drive campaign, where participants receive a weekly reminder to purchase one item, and setting it aside for your “Basket”. By the end of the 12 weeks our participants would have stocked up the essentials of our hampers. Our committee members are spread across Melbourne, and we will organise a storage shed, so participants are guaranteed that there will be a convenient spot to drop off the basket. Simply sign up to become a Basket Buddy and we will send you the checklist. Either shop weekly or in one go, it’s up to you.

Basket Buddies is perfect for schools, workplaces and other community groups. Collect the items at a designated corner, and at the end of the programme, we can arrange for a drop off or pick up.

Nothing brings on the Christmas spirit more than seeing a pile of toys under a Christmas tree at a school or workplace. What makes it more meaningful is that these donated toys and books are going to special needs children and children from struggling families who would otherwise miss out on having anything to unwrap this Christmas. We know that Melbournians are a generous bunch who give from the heart; however we need someone to be the guiding star of their group. If you would like to organise a Wishing Tree Toy Donation Drive, simply register via this form, and we will send you a Wishing Tree Toy Donation Drive kit and provide the support you need.

Every year in October and November we conduct traffic light collections at various intersections throughout Melbourne city and surrounding suburbs. All training, equipment and documentation is provided by the committee; participants simply have to be over 18 years and have 2 hours free on the weekend! If you are interested in joining us for a tin shake, please contact us.

We are looking for energetic people who would like to join the committee. The committee comprises of people from all sorts of backgrounds and skillset who are scattered across Melbourne.We typically hold our teleconference’s on Tuesday nights and keep in contact regularly through various group discussions. If you would like a challenge and something worthwhile to add to your CV, contact us. And of course, no prior experience necessary, just enthusiasm!

Many companies across Melbourne give back to the community by providing their colleagues a day to volunteer in community projects. Corporate Day is essential in ensuring that our food and toys are ready for Packing Day.

Corporate Day is typically organised on the first or second Friday of December each year. Not only is it rewarding, but it is fun. To register your expression of interest, either as an individual or as a representative from a company please fill out this form.

Packing Day 2019 confirmed: Sunday 15th December

The Packing Day is when all the hampers are packed and toys are wrapped. Volunteers who wish to deliver hampers are allocated hampers and toy sacks to deliver to nominated families over the next few days leading up to Christmas Day. Over the years Melbourne Basket Brigade has successfully sent out thousands of hampers and Packing Day has garnered a loyal group of volunteers from across Melbourne and media attention. If you wish to join in the fun in the gift of giving, registrations for limited spots are open in October. Families and individuals are all welcome!

When: Packing Day is typically held on the first or second Sunday of December annually. Volunteer Sign-in commences at 10.00am, and vehicle loading for deliveries begins at 2:30 pm.

Where: Xavier College has been kindly supporting Melbourne Basket Brigade for many years and we will confirm which hall we will occupy later this year.

Register to volunteer: For safety reasons, volunteer attendance is strictly controlled via registration. An online registration form will be made available in November. Please use the Contact Us form to be added to the mailing list, or follow our Facebook page to keep track on the latest news. Everybody is welcome, you can come and pack hampers, wrap toys and deliver the hampers too – it’s really up to you. FAQ

A: The Basket Brigades work with local grass roots community groups and organisations that work with the families in need. By connecting with these groups we are able to help them provide much needed services that they would otherwise struggle to provide. We are also able to identify the people most worthy of the donations.
A: We deliver baskets to wherever they are needed.
A: We are a not for profit organisation that is run totally by volunteers who care about making a difference in the lives of others. The only administrative fees we have are some basic postage costs and our insurances. So approximately 98-99% of the funds raised are used on the projects, programs and people in the community. Where possible all our brochures and marketing materials are donated by generous businesses who are keen supporters of the Basket Brigade. If you have a business and would like to support us give us a call or drop us an email – we would love to hear from you.
A: The Basket Brigades listed on this website are a program of the Magic Moments Foundation of Australia which is a registered non-profit charity. Any donation over $2 will receive a tax deductible receipt which you can then use to claim as a tax deduction.
A: The baskets consist of staple foods, festive foods and items as well as toys for the children of the families. Pasta, rice, tinned and fresh foods accompany Christmas cakes, tinned ham, custard and jelly. The idea is to provide yummy things to make a festive Christmas Day and staple items for the days before and after. We also often provide hampers with slight variations for families who may have dietary or religious restrictions around particular foods if we are made aware of this.
A: The baskets are given anonymously – in the true spirit of Christmas these baskets are a gift to show that there are people who love and care for them even if they never find out who these people are. A small note is included in the parcel that lets them know that this is a gift from someone that cares and encourages them to do the same when the day comes that they are able to.
