NSW – Sydney Basket Brigade
Please note that our activities have finished for 2016 and we don’t have any open volunteering opportunities until next year.
The Sydney Basket Brigade operates once a year, at the begining of December, to pack and distribute hampers and gifts for families in need. We work with organisations that support these families througout the year, and our mission is to bring hope and joy, not only to those receiving our baskets, but to all members of the community who get together to make it happen.
Our season runs from April to early December, ending on Packing Day. Packing Day is traditionally held on the second Saturday of December, and it’s a big, festive day, when our volunteers gather to pack and deliver all hampers.
If you wish to volunteer with us, please get back in touch in April, when we start planning the next brigade. We accept donations at any time, and all donations received go towards producing the hampers.
There are numerous ways a person or an organisation can help us:
Joining our organisational commitee – help plan and execute the next basket brigade. We meet at the second Monday of the month, from May onwards, via Google Hangouts.
Signing up as a sponsor – pick a different level of cash sponsorship and we will promote your business to our subscribers (limited number of sponsorships available)
Registering to run a “Donation Station” – collect food and gifts at your company, school or club, during November. These donations get collected on the first week of December to be packed on Packing Day.
Donating products – donate products for the hampers.
Registering for “Corporate Week” – kick your corporate social responsibility goals by sending a team to help get ready for Packing Day. Corporate week happens during the week leading up to the big day.
Picking up donations – drive around Sydney during the first few days of December picking up donations from our donation stations and taking them to our warehouse for sorting.
Helping on Packing Day – register to volunteer on the big day. Either you join us solo or bring your whole family, packing day is about our community getting together to bring hope for others. A beautiful day of giving and community spirit.
Make a Donation
A tax deductible contribution will go a long way to help us make this year’s brigade a success.
The brigade is 100% run by volunteers, there are many ways you can help:
Donate: cash donations are used to buy products and pay for expenses, such as forklifts and trash bins for packing day. Cash donations above $2 are tax deductible.
Fundraising: ask your family and friends to support us, or have a basket drive at your kids school or your work. Gold coin donation drives are usually very successful. We appreciate every little bit of help.
Set up a Donation Station: set up one at your workplace and ask your family and friends to do the same. Send us an email and we will help you get it all organised.
Get your workmates together: Get a Corporate Team together for pre-Packing Day prep week. It’s a great team bonding activity! Corporate teams help to sort donations, decorate/paint hamper boxes, wrap gifts and write Christmas cards.
Volunteer for packing day: Watch the sidebar video and see how it works. It’s a wonderful day of community spirit. Everybody is welcome, so if you want to make a real difference at a grass roots level to families in need at Christmas time, come join us!
A: The Basket Brigades work with local grass roots community groups and organisations that work with the families in need. By connecting with these groups we are able to help them provide much needed services that they would otherwise struggle to provide. We are also able to identify the people most worthy of the donations.
A: We are a not for profit organisation that is run totally by volunteers who care about making a difference in the lives of others. The only administrative fees we have are some basic postage costs and our insurances. So approximately 98-99% of the funds raised are used on the projects, programs and people in the community. Where possible all our brochures and marketing materials are donated by generous businesses who are keen supporters of the Basket Brigade. If you have a business and would like to support us give us a call or drop us an email – we would love to hear from you.
A: The Basket Brigades listed on this website are a program of the Magic Moments Foundation of Australia which is a registered non-profit charity. Any donation over $2 will receive a tax deductible receipt which you can then use to claim as a tax deduction.
A: The baskets consist of staple foods, festive foods and items as well as toys for the children of the families. Pasta, rice, tinned and fresh foods accompany Christmas cakes, tinned ham, custard and jelly. The idea is to provide yummy things to make a festive Christmas Day and staple items for the days before and after. We also often provide hampers with slight variations for families who may have dietary or religious restrictions around particular foods if we are made aware of this.
A: The baskets are given anonymously – in the true spirit of Christmas these baskets are a gift to show that there are people who love and care for them even if they never find out who these people are. A small note is included in the parcel that lets them know that this is a gift from someone that cares and encourages them to do the same when the day comes that they are able to.
